Day 41, Aug. 13: Attean Falls to Jackman, ME

Mileage: 7 miles

Weather: Hot (80s?), sunny

Portage: 1 (Finished carrying around falls through campsites. Put-in is just below the small falls.)

Wildlife: Herons, loon

Had a leisurely breakfast, then paddled onto the island-dotted Attean Pond from the Moose River to Big Woods Pond under a big, blue sky. Stopped for a snack along the shore of Big Woods before looking for the Sally Mountain Cabins where Kay was slated to meet us. Kay had been picked up at the Bangor airport and taken to my car in Stratton, then drove to Jackman to rendezvous with Kacia and I.

Ironically, Kay had JUST walked down to the adjacent boat landing with her book and water and saw us arriving. Perfect timing--and still amazed about the coincidence. Found our accommodations, an upstairs apartment-like space that is part of the Sally Mountain Cabins. We each had our own bedroom and a full kitchen. Headed to the library, repacked the food barrel, did some laundry and grocery shopping before continuing on to satisfy my meat cravings at the Bigwoods Steakhouse just down the road from the cabins. (What IS up with that?! I had the New York strip.) If you wanted adult beverages, you had to BYOB.  Kay returned with the 6-pack we had picked up grocery shopping. Several parties were French-speaking Canadians who arrived with a cooler of wine. After dinner, we drove north on the 15 mile highway leading to Canada to look for moose. Apparently we missed the turn-off where there are "always" moose to be seen. Unless Kacia sees one on her drive back to the Bangor airport, she only heard a moose during her week with me.
